Good bye Texas

I was able to start driving earlier this morning, as the temperature was over 40 by 9a.m.

Still no deep interactions with anyone, although I am moving pretty quickly. I want to make it to the Bay to get my truck smogged in time to leave California and be back in Atlanta by the 4th of January. Then I’m hoping to make it to D.C. for the January 18th march.

We’ll see.

Of course, being Sunday if/when I can find a Y, they close early – sometimes at 2pm, other times maybe 4pm. But I’m too late pulling into El Paso to find one, even with the hours I gained heading through time zones going west.

But I do find a Planet Fitness to work out at – thanks to my health insurance paying for Silver Sneakers – a benefit I will lose January 1st but it’s been a nice alternative to working out at the Y, as they are often open 24/7 or at least 24/5.

I’ll cross state lines into New Mexico tonight – where there is a very modern, very new rest area I like to rest at. There’s parking for probably more than 50 vehicles but most of the time there’s only a couple cars there. I don’t think semis can negotiate the parking lot so well so usually I don’t have to worry about those annoying diesel engines rumbling the whole time I’m trying to rest.

I’ll make a huge pot of soup for tonight’s meal and road food tomorrow. As there’s plenty of sun, my solar is being a star!

PEE, COKE, AND VIDEO

My RRB has already been peed on, had a cup of coffee or soda thrown onto the “Mujeres Creciendo La Paz” side so far this trip. But at least my windshield is in tact as are all 6 of my tires. So maybe MAGA’s violence has diminished.

ENCOUNTERING THE MAGA OTHER

I have my first lengthy discussion this morning as I’m preparing to get on the road again. As I walk to the bathroom and back again, I notice a friendly-appearing older white man watching me. When I get into my truck, he walks by the driver’s side, still smiling affably, continues down the sidewalk and then returns.

I can’t immediately tell if he’s a shallow salesperson-friendly or a genuine friendly.

SILENCE IS not GOLDEN

I’m too tired from my early morning awakening, my fuel hose repair task, and the past few days preparing – always challenging getting ready for a prolonged road trip – to drive for very long. I try to drive until at least dusk to take the temperature of those traveling north along my beaten path.

I realize I was expecting some kind of strong reaction one way or the other
