WE THE PEOPLE REFUSE:

My most recent protest sign:

on one side: WE THE PEOPLE REFUSE TO BE THE MILITARY’S FUCKING TRAINING GROUND

on the other side: MILITARY: TRAIN AT THE WHITE HOUSE

I stood on the busy corner of College & Ashby Aves this afternoon, holding up this sign at the traffic light. The responses to both sides of my sign were all positive: honks, waves, thumbs up, and even several “I’m with you” and other statements of concurrence from passersby.

One old white man muttered “nice language” to which I enthusiastically replied “right, do you believe the president said this?”

Walking back to the laundry mat, a grizzled white homeless man, who had been incoherently shouting “why are people so cruel?” when I first passed, this time he looked me in the eye and declared “I think I’ve been the training ground for the military already.”

I expressed how sorry this happened to him, as I walked on by, acknowledging the truth in what he coherently said.

When I get into my truck, he walks by the driver’s side, still smiling affably, continues down the sidewalk and then returns.

I can’t immediately tell if he’s a shallow salesperson-friendly or a genuine friendly.

SILENCE IS not GOLDEN

I’m too tired from my early morning awakening, my fuel hose repair task, and the past few days preparing – always challenging getting ready for a prolonged road trip – to drive for very long. I try to drive until at least dusk to take the temperature of those traveling north along my beaten path.

I realize I was expecting some kind of strong reaction one way or the other
